Permanent employees receive two (2) floating holidays upon hire and on January 1 of each year. These hours have no accrual cap and are paid out upon separation.

Designated exempt employees receive an annual allotment of paid management leave—typically 60 hours each fiscal year. This leave is separate from vacation accruals and does not roll over from year to year.

Permanent employees accrue 8 hours of sick leave per pay period, with prorated accruals for part-time positions. Most units have unlimited accrual, though Peace Officer and Management units are capped at 1,000 hours.

Upon retirement, any unused sick leave is converted to CalPERS service credit. For details regarding potential payouts at the time of separation, please consult your specific MOU or Salary Resolution.

Note: In accordance with state law, temporary employees receive 5 days of paid sick leave each year.

Vacation is earned based on years of service, starting at a minimum of 6.67 hours per pay period annually for new hires an reaching a maximum of 14 hours for those with over 10 years of service. Part-time roles receive prorated amounts, and all employees are subject to a 360-hour total balance cap. Any unused balance is paid out upon separation and eligible employees have the flexibility to utilize annual cash-out options for up to 80 hours of accrued vacation time.
