Dog and Cat Licensing Information

 

By law all dogs must be licensed in the city or county jurisdiction they live in.

Dog license fees help pay for the care of lost and orphaned pets, for animal cruelty investigations and other community services that promote animal health and safety.

Licensing Requirements

  • Current rabies vaccine certificate.
  • Spay or Neuter certificate or letter signed by a vet verifying the spay or neuter.
  • Dog owners are required to obtain a license for their dog when the dog has reached the age of four months or within thirty days of first bringing the dog into the County whichever event occurs later.
  • Cat owners may obtain but are not required to license cats in the same manner as dogs.

 Where Do I Get My License:

  • Madera County residents with get their dog license through the Madera Animal Shelter located at:

  • City of Madera residents will get their dog license through the Madera Police Department located at:

330 S. C Street Madera, Ca. 93638

  • City of Chowchilla residents will get their dog license through the Chowchilla Police Department located at: 122 Trinity Avenue Chowchilla, Ca. 93610

How to License your Pet in Person:

  • After your veterinarian gives you the dog or cat rabies vaccination certificate, you will need to come to the Madera County Animal Shelter with the vaccination certificate, spay/neuter certificate, or letter of alteration signed by a veterinarian, and if you are 65 years of age or older proof of age for the senior discount rate for altered pets only. 
  • The shelter is open Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm or Saturday 10:00 am -2:00 pm. 
  • The shelter excepts cash, check, or debit/credit (fees apply) as payment forms.
  • Any further questions you may contact the shelter at (559) 675-7891. 

How to License your Pet by Mail:

  • After your veterinarian gives you the dog or cat rabies vaccination certificate, you will need to fill out the License Application form and mail it along with the spay/ neuter certificate or letter of alteration verification from a vet, copy of your drivers license for proof of age for senior discount if you are 65+ years (senior discount rate for altered pets only), and a check or money order to:

Lost or Damaged Tags:

If your dog loses its license tag, or you can no longer read or attach the tag to your dog's collar you will need to: 

  • Send a $5.00 check or money order made payable to Madera County for a replacement. 
  • Please make reference of your dog's previous license number on the memo portion of the check and mail it to:

Other:

If your dog passes away, you move out of Madera County, dog runs away, or you give your dog away, please let the Madera Animal Shelter know so they can update licensing records. You may contact them by either:

  • calling the Madera Animal Shelter at (5590 675-7891
  • emailing the Madera Animal Shelter at AnimalControl2@Madera-County.com
  • or by mailing Madera County Animal Services at 14269 Road 28 Madera, Ca 93638

The Shelter will need you to provide: 

  • Name of the person the licensing is under
  • Address and Phone number
  • Dogs name and license number

Or you may mail back your pet's license renewal notice with the proper box marked so we can update our database. Unfortunately the balance of your pet's license is not refundable.
